Things I learned in the last week or so- 10/20-10/30/13

1. Jennifer Garner is officially my new favorite celebrity based on this quote while accepting an award at the Elle’s Women in Hollywood Celebration, “Can we just stop pretending that skinny jeans are a good look on anyone?  Can we just band together and go for a nice boot cut, please?  Ladies?  And crop tops while we’re at it.”

2. Yelling “Smile!” at kids when they aren’t smiling for their school pictures is not an effective way to get them to smile.  I may not be a fancy “photographer,” but I’m smart enough to figure that out.  Also, it really shouldn’t take over an hour to take pictures of nine 4-year-olds.

3. My Titans lost again on Sunday to Houston and are now 2-6.  Awesome.  They started rookie Zach Mettenberger, who was lookin’ super groovy at his press interviews.  Too bad it didn’t help us win…

That's our quarterback on the left. You might recognize the other guy from such movies as "Zoolander" and "Dodgeball."

4. My fantasy team dominated (Sorry, Angela!), and I came in first place this week in the Pick ‘Em League.  I am still in sixth place overall, but I moved up from seventh place!

5. We took a great field trip to the Walden Farms Pumpkin Patch on Monday.  I did not drive, as I didn’t want to end up in a ditch again.  My kiddos had a good time picking pumpkins, climbing a hay tower, petting animals, and going on a hay ride.  I had a fun time too, but I was pooped by the end of the day!

6. When I picked up Sammy from my Mom’s house after tutoring on Tuesday, he felt really warm.  Little guy had a temperature of 102.3.  He has still been happy and playing like his normal self, but he had to miss his Halloween party. 😦

7. My kids looked so cute for the Halloween Party on Wednesday!  We had a pirate princess, Daisy Duck, General Grievous from Star Wars, Batman, Robin, a ladybug, a dead pirate, an astronaut, and Anna from “Frozen.”  They had fun trick-or-treating, playing a variety of Halloween games, and decorating cookies.

These are just random kids in Halloween costumes. I would get in trouble for posting pictures of my actual kids.

8. Doorjambs are the devil!  In this post, I told about one of my girls busting her lip and nose on one.  Well, on Wednesday one of my boys tripped and busted his head open on the doorjamb.  It was truly horrific.  The cut was so deep, you could see the bone.  Both of his parents were in Dallas, so his Grandma had to rush over to get him and take him to the ER.  We got the bleeding stopped and tried to keep him calm and awake until she got there.  I was still shaking an hour after it happened.  In good news, the CT scan did not show any damage, and he was stitched up and sent home.  In bad news, I am still pretty traumatized.

Update: I talked to his Mom this evening and he ended up getting 20 stitches!  Yeesh.

9. We are a whole family of sickies.  Mike stayed home yesterday and today, and I woke up not feeling so good this morning.  We have used this free time to watch a lot of “Sons of Anarchy” season six. (Only while Sammy is sleeping, of course!)

Things I learned lately- 9/21-9/24/13

1. I learned all of these baby animal names at my friend Brooke’s baby shower.

  • A baby monkey is called an infant.
  • A baby fish is called a fry.
  • Baby hippos, elephants, and giraffes are all called calves.
  • A baby pigeon is called a squab.

2. I need to be more careful when I let Sammy play with my cell phone.  I ended up leaving it at the baby shower, as it fell between the couch cushions and no one noticed.  I was phoneless for two days.  (I felt naked!)

3. My Titans won again!!!  We beat the San Diego Chargers 20-17 in our first home game of the season.  It was a very exciting game, with rookie Justin Hunter catching the game-winning touchdown with 15 seconds left- his first NFL catch ever!!  We are now 2-1 and in a three-way tie for first in the division.  My fantasy team got killed- you know it’s a bad week when your kicker makes more points than your quarterback.  I also made a rookie move and played Ray Rice, who was out with an injury- Doh!  The Schleganators are now 1-2.  I ended up in 3rd place this week in the Pro Pick’Em League, but I’m still in last place overall.

4. Sammy has learned to clap! It is super cute, as is pretty much everything Sammy does.  Except poop.  Pooping is never cute.

5. BIG NEWS: The four-year-old teacher at Mother’s Day Out is going to stay home to homeschool her kids.  I am being moved to lead four-year-old teacher starting October 21st.  Yay!!!  No More Diapers!!

6. I accidentally shut the outside door to our classroom on one of our toddler’s fingers on Monday.  I felt AWFUL!!!  I called his mom to tell her about it, and she decided to come check it out and took him to the doctor.  No word on whether it is broken or not.  I would have felt really bad if I had squashed Sammy’s finger, but doing it to someone else’s kid is even worse.

7. Who killed Flora on “Devious Maids.”  It was Philippe Delatour- aka the dad from “Seventh Heaven.”  He did a great job at being an evil son of a gun, very different from his “Seventh Heaven” character.  The show has been picked up for a second season, for which I am thankful.  It is a great summer guilty pleasure.

8. I finally installed the jumping seat I got Sammy at a yard sale, referenced in this post.  He LOVES it!!!  He has bounced and laughed for several hours today.  Georgia is, of course, terrified of the jumping seat.

Things I learned lately- 9/29-10/3/12

I have been a bit of a slacker about blogging lately, because I have been super busy!  My 80s party was this past weekend, and Miriam and Stuart came to visit and help out.  I am now officially 30, but don’t feel all that old.  Without further ado, here are the things I have been learning (Be prepared, it’s a long one):

1. If you go to the Loveless Cafe on Saturday morning, be prepared to wait a loooong time.  We waited an hour and a half, and were told that this was a slow weekend. As Stuart told the people walking in as we left, “It’s worth it!!”

2. Miriam, Stuart, and I make super cute farmers.

3. Miriam and I had a blast decorating the house all 80s.  In the future, I will buy less candy for parties with adults.  We have enough Ring Pops, Big League Chew, Pop Rocks, and Fun Dip to last us till next year.

4. I should have previewed the DVD of 80s music videos I purchased on Amazon.  The video for “Let’s Get Physical” is rather inappropriate for an audience that includes my parents.  Watch if you dare:

5. Mike and I and Miriam and Stuart make awesome 80s couples. (Mike was going for 80s cop.)

6. I have always made fun of people who wear leggings as pants.  However, I must say they are insanely comfortable.  I won’t be wearing them out in public or anything, but I am going to be wearing them around the house for the next few months, for sure.

7. The Feed Mill in Nolensville has really good chicken salad.  Also, their chocolate chip cookies are literally as big as your face, and delicious!  I highly recommend checking this fun little place out.

8. My Titans lost to Houston 14-38 and are now 1-3.  Jake Locker separated his shoulder during the game, and Hasselbeck threw two interceptions, both which turned into touchdowns for Houston.  I really wanted a win for my birthday.  Alas, it was not to be.

9. My JE Moss fantasy team finally won a game, but Miriam’s team killed me in our Girls league.  I am now tied for 1st place in the Pick’em League with Stuart’s brother. It says  I am in 2nd, but we have the same number of points, so I am saying we are tied.

10. The hubby surprised me majorly with a full-size keyboard for my birthday. (Major points for him!)  I am now planning on starting The Schlegel Family Band.  I will be on keyboard and vocals, Mike on guitar and vocals, and we are going to teach Sammy to play the egg.

11. I am waaaaay behind on tv, but I caught up a little bit last night.  First off, the Survivor premiere showed us all how there are still plenty of stupid people willing to play Survivor.  Zane, I’m talking to you.  Don’t volunteer yourself to go home at the first Tribal Council as some twisted kind of strategy!  That’s not strategy, that’s idiocy.  I also caught the premieres of Up All Night, The Office, and Parks and Recreation.  The Office is a sad shell of its former self, but Up All Night and Parks and Recreation were both delightful.  I love you, Leslie Knope!

Things I learned this weekend- 9/7-9/9/12

1. I have never had so many kids bring food for Culture Day.  I had two kinds of taquitos, chicken enchiladas, two kinds of tamales, and papusas. Luckily, I had a mom come and help out or I’m not sure I would have gotten all the food heated up and served.  On a side note, Disney (who is Hispanic) brought grape Kool-Aid and Lindor truffles.  I have no idea how that is part of his culture…

2. One of my 2nd grade team members had a very traumatizing experience on Culture Day.  A special needs student in her class choked on a lollipop, and she couldn’t get it out.  Luckily, a mom who was there helping came to the rescue.  I am now officially afraid to give lollipops to my kids.

3. Mike and I were so tired, we went to bed at 8:00 Friday night like little old people.

4. The new Strawberry Shortcake muffin at Mimi’s is just YUM!

5. I watched a lot of football today.  My poor Titans lost to the Patriots- who I can’t stand- and our quarterback was injured.  Definitely not the way I wanted to see my team open the season.  In other football news, it looks like RG3 (Robert Griffin III) might be the real deal.  I wish he was on one of my fantasy teams!

6. The Top Four dancers on the finale of So You Think You Can Dance are: Tiffany, Eliana, Chehon, and Cyrus.  There will be two winners this year and I am rooting for Eliana and Chehon.  I really don’t think Cyrus is as talented as the other three, and has gotten by on personality.  Also, I still hate his giant ear holes.
